An update on sailing operations with respect to COVID 19 from the Squamish Yacht Club
Like you, Squamish Yacht Club is deeply concerned about the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. We take the health and safety of our sailors seriously and want to promote socially responsible practices during this time. We are closely monitoring daily updates and taking the advice of our health professionals and local authorities. We are listening and practicing their recommendations on social distancing and self-isolation
Fall 2021 info
Due to a number of repairs, maintenance and instructor availability we are not able to offer adult lessons this fall.
We are taking the time to give the boats some love after a busy summer and putting a number of our up-and-coming instructors through their certification process!
We are working hard to be ready for the spring to accommodate adult lessons, advanced sailing, school groups and our awesome summer camps!
I will notify everyone in the Spring with schedules and if you want to get added to the info list please email firstname.lastname@example.org
*Covid requirements to be revised in 2022
Introduction to Sailing & Kayaking:
This program is for youth 7 to 10 years old. It is a one-week introduction to sailing and kayaking where students have the opportunity to get on the water and try first a variety of various skills in a fun and controlled environment. Students learn how to rig boats, various maneuvers; tacking, gybing, docking, capsizing, etc. Most of our little sailors are cruising around by themselves after only a few days! We adapt to all ability, comfort and learning levels. The SYC Sailing School is an incluisive and supportive environment. Tuition is $350 for the one week and enrolment is limited to ten students each session: Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 pm.
This program is for youth 10 to 16 years old. This is a two week program where students will work towards the newly developed CAN SAIL levels 1 to 3. The tuition TBD for 10 days of instruction and fun on the water. Reduced rate for the 9 day session. Enrollment is limited to 9 students in each session.
CanSail 5-6 (CanSail 4-6 combined)
This program is for youth 10 to 15 years old. This is a two week program where students work towards the newly developed CAN SAIL levels 4 to 6. The tuition is TBD for 10 days on instruction and fun on the water. Enrollment is limited to 9 students who have already completed CanSail 3. There is an opportunity for participants to join the Spring & Fall Advanced Sailing Team and attend the annual Whistler Regatta and the Commodores Cup Regatta!
Young sailors ages 5-7. Does sailing float your boat? Come try sailing and learn about being safe around the water. Big brother/sister tag along option. 5 half day (9am-12pm) sailing sessions to give the little sailors a chance to play on the water. Explore the basics of sailing while developing safety and awareness on and around the water. Fee and dates TBD.
Adult Lessons Group & Private:
Zero to hero. Set up your own private lesson solo/ with a private group or register for a set lesson block. Our lessons generally run as 4 x 2h blocks where we take you from no experience to comfortably tacking upwind, navigate downwind and understanding the basic concepts of sailing and general safety.
What next? Once you can comfortably tack, gybe and dock, you will be invited to our drop in evenings where you can continue to improve your sailing skills. Furthermore, you can apply these skills to larger boats should you want to take the next step. We strongly encourage anyone learning to sail to consider learning in a dinghy as it is the best way to get a hands-on learning approach and feel all the sail trim adjustments, balance, and trial by error.
We hope to see you there!
The Advanced Sailing Team is available to SYC junior members who are looking to improve their sailing skills, have fun and learn to cooperate as a team in a racing environment. Advanced Sailing will provide sailors with an extra opportunity to get out on the water throughout the summer to develop their skills as racers and train with an experienced sailing coach to improve their performance at targeted events. Must have previous experience prior to registering, please speak with on of our coaches!
SYC MEMBER DROP IN - by donation
Hop into a dinghy with your friend, spouse, kkids,or bubble member. We'll teach you all the basics of sailing so you can get out onto the sound on your own. Used to be a dinghy sailor, come show us what you've got. Have a kid in sailing school, let them show you a thing or two!
The goal is to create a space for members to come and enjoy sailing; beer on the dock, sailing a boat, come hang out. We will have two instructors available to facilitate lessons, improve skills or even a few fun races.
